Ten reasons why I believe the Prodrive P2 supercar is the 2008 Subaru WRX prototype in disguise
What if this Prodrive P2 is, in fact, the next 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX?
I thought it over a bit and the more I thought about ot, the more it made sense. Here then, are ten reasons why I have no doubt that the Prodrive P2 is, in fact, the next Subaru WRX. Plus, one reason why I know it’s not.
1. It’s based on a modified Subaru R1 city car chassis. Normally, “technology showcase cars,” as the P2 is claimed to be, are based on fancy one-off structures. The family heritage is highly suspect.
2. Subaru often sub-contracts design to outside companies. Both the SVX Alcyone and Tribeca are products of outside design studios.
3. To be competitive in the WRC, the next WRX needs to be smaller and sport a shorter wheelbase, such as on the P2. Subaru also needs more grip than Pirelli can muster, but that’s different topic.
4. Prodrive has stated numerous times that they are not going to build the P2. They never said that someone else wouldn’t be building it.
5. The Impreza P1 was essentially a racecar for the street based on the original Impreza chassis.
6. Though the B5TPH is larger than the Prodrive P2, the two share very similar lines.
7. I want to own a Prodrive P2. Unless Subaru builds them, it’s unlikely anyone else will. And that makes me sad.
8. The nose on the 2008 Legacy resembles the nose of the P2 – albeit a less aggressive version.
9. The Impreza is simply too big. It’s almost the same size as the Legacy. To be more balanced in its product line, a two door hatch is a must. Such a change would definitely be a bold move. To test market acceptance the might have contracted Prodrive to put P2 forward. Then, if everyone loved it, it would get the Subaru name. If panned, Subaru will go with “Plan B” which is probably a B5TPH-based design.
10. If Subaru built the P2, nobody would really care who’s name was on it originally. Heck, it’s mostly made from off-the-shelf Subaru kit anyhow, not like it’s a far stretch to call it a Subaru.
