“Rally Japan has traditionally been a rally of attrition, and we’ve seen today that this remains true despite the change of location” said David Richards, Subaru World Rally Team Principal. “We’ve also seen some very tricky conditions today, despite which Petter and Chris have kept their heads to finish in solid positions from which we are well placed to make the most of the remaining two days.”
“The car was not right this morning so we lost a lot, but it was much better this afternoon and we were able to make up time” said Chris Atkinson. “I had a lot of understeer this morning and after service it was less. It was enjoyable to drive. Ok the times are still not where we want them, but we didn’t lose a lot of time to Sebastien this afternoon. Ford seem to have a very good engineering package for these conditions though and they’re very fast. I was making up time this afternoon so it would have been nice to keep going without the cancellations.”
“The stages this afternoon were very rutted and slippery, but we had no major problems today other than a small off in the first stage, but no damage” said Petter Solberg. “Today’s stages were very narrow and slippery and we knew that it would be difficult. The stages tomorrow will be much faster though and I think they will suit us much better so hopefully tomorrow we can increase our speed. I want to fight for a podium. The approach doesn’t change. It’s always the same focus on fighting for a win coming into every rally.”

“Again Rally Japan has proved unforgiving, and of course it is disappointing for everyone that Petter has retired, but overall there have been a lot of positives today” said David Richards, Subaru World Rally Team Principal. “Chris and Stéphane are in a solid fourth place, and Petter’s stage win clearly shows the potential of the new Impreza. Our recent testing efforts have focused on our gravel performance, and the benefit of this is beginning to show.”
“Of course it is disappointing and I must say sorry to the Subaru fans, but we have had some very good things from today” said Petter Solberg. “We came round a left hander on stage 18 and hit a large hole and the car just spun around. I went to start again but the rear geometry was all broken. We were pushing hard and sometimes things like this happen. It’s disappointing, but honestly it has been a very good day. It was really good fun to drive and I really enjoyed it, and to win a stage is very good. We are definitely going in the right direction. We must look at the positives as there has been a lot good about today.”
“Today was ok; we started ahead of Petter but he was a little quicker and got in front” said Chris Atkinson. “But then he had his accident which is unlucky for the team and the Subaru fans as we were both in good positions and you never know what could happen on this rally. In stage 18, when Petter went off it left a big hole in the ground and we hit it as well and spun round. We damaged our suspension a little bit, but ok we could drive still, but not flat out. I think we are too far behind to push for third tomorrow so the main aim is to keep our position.”

Rally po Japonski je končan.
1. Hirvonen - Ford
2. Latvala - Ford + 31s
3. Loeb - Citroen + 2min 30s
4. Atkinson - Subaru + 3min 42s
5. Andersson - Suzuki + 5min 12s
6. Gardemeister - Suzuki + 6min 9s
7. Wilson - Ford + 7min 5s
8. Solberg - Subaru + 13min 19s
Točkovanje voznikov po 14 rallyih od 15:
1. Loeb - 112
2. Hirvonen - 102
3. Sordo - 59
4. Atkinson - 50
5. Latvala - 50
6. Solberg - 41
Točkovanje moštev:
1. Citroen - 175
2. Ford - 164
3. Subaru - 93
4. Stobart Ford - 64
Patrick Pivato je v stabilnem stanju toda še zmeraj v umetni komi, saj ga v ponedeljek in torek čakata še dve operaciji.
“Today has been especially challenging with some of the most difficult conditions we’ve seen on a WRC event for many years” said David Richards, Subaru World Rally Team Principal. “We have won four stages this weekend on home soil, and clearly demonstrated a good step forward in performance. This will stand us in good stead as we head for the final round of the championship in GB at the start of December.”
“The conditions were very tricky today and we just focused on maintaining our place” said Chris Atkinson. “There was no need to push for position; we had two minutes behind us and a minute and a half in front after the morning so there was no need to do anything silly, but it was still so easy to make a mistake as it’s so slippery with full rain and mud. The top three had no problems, so that’s the best we could do. It’s been a tricky weekend for everyone as the conditions were really difficult with a lot of rain and a lot of water standing in the road, and even at the pace we were going it was difficult to keep the car on the road. We were aquaplaning everywhere so it’s good to get through and to finish the rally.”
“I must say that we and Subaru have done a very good job and I’m very happy with my performance on Saturday and Sunday. We have improved the speed quite a lot and we have many stage wins and that’s very important” said Petter Solberg. “There really are a lot of good things to come from this rally and we need to continue to work with the car from exactly where it is now. Today was so difficult in the conditions. We had a few problems like a puncture and the screen fully blocked with fog on the long stage in the morning [SS23] so I think we could have won a few more stages actually. I’ve enjoyed coming back again today, and the team did a very good job to get the car ready and I’m very proud of them. If I’m fourth, or fifth, or sixth, for me, honestly it doesn’t matter. The main thing here is that we get the car faster and get back to the top and to fight for a win again. That’s absolutely the main thing.”
